This Old Fashioned recipe is a tweek on the traditional Old Fashioned. Instead of using a sugar cube to sweeten the cocktail, I have substituted the sugar with Spiced Apple Syrup for a little fall flavor, and to mellow out the sweetness of the cocktail with the spice and tart of the apples. Although a traditional Old Fashioned uses bourbon, you can use dark rum, whiskey, or brandy. The Tipsy take goes like this:
2 oz. bourbon (Some good bourbons are Four Roses Single Barrel, Elijah Craig 12 year, Jack Daniels Gentleman Jack, or my favorite, High West Distillery American Prairie Bourbon)
2-3 dashes aromatic bitters (Portland Syrups Aromatic Bitters)
Orange peel and slice of Honeycrisp apple to garnish
Using a rocks glass, measure out the spiced apple syrup into the glass and add 2-3 dashes of Portland Syrups aromatic bitters and stir. Add 2 oz. bourbon or spirit of your choice, add ice and stir. Using a peeler, peel a slice of orange rind and be careful not to get too much of the white. Twist the orange peel over the glass to express the oils on top of the cocktail and rub the rim of the glass with the peel. Garnish with a thin slice of apple. Cheers!
